who is stephen abshire?
Originally from Indiana, I have found myself across the North American continent over the past few years. From a year in Arkansas as a broadcast meteorologist to now living in Vancouver, BC, my expectations to what I am capable of achieving has been blown out of the water.
I grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis, where I meet my wonderful partner, Caroline, and a number of hugely impactful people in my life. Following high school, I attended Purdue University to pursue Atmospheric Science. Undergrad started out rough as I studied Calculus for the first time, but only became more turbulent as we fell into the COVID pandemic at the end of my sophomore year. Not the most ideal way to spend the “best years of your life”…
But looking back at it all, I wouldn’t change a thing. The next two years were filled with trips with my new and old friends, joining a band, traveling back and forth to Indiana University to see Caroline, and beginning to love forecasting and weather.
After Purdue and IU, Caroline and I decided to tryout a new area of the U.S and we settled upon Northwest Arkansas so that I could pursue broadcast meteorology. My time with 5NEWS was a wonderful learning experience where I worked with amazing people day in and day out. I was able to hone my craft as an on-air talent and learned an incredible amount of forecasting knowledge from the weather team. We also decided to get a puppy when living in Arkansas, which might be the single greatest decision Caroline and I have ever made.
When it came time to think about our future, we jumped at an incredible opportunity to live in another country and see parts of the world we have never experienced. Vancouver has only been our home for a few months, but is truly a fantastic fit for us.
